Wine at Five

Bottles and Bottles of Wine and all my life to drink them

Dinner with Cecile Dusserre

A NIGHT OUT ON THE RHONE

I realized from the amount of ‘Out of Office’ replies I received to last week’s Weekly Re’Wine’der that it’s vacation time in Rye! In fact between now and the end of April there is at least one school that will be on holiday each and every week! Not to worry, we have the perfect antidote for those that remain behind.

Dinner at Morgan’s Restaurant on March 9. We have reserved the back room and we can, with notice, configure tables in various seating orders if you happen to be 4, 6, 8 or even 10. We are going to serve five different courses each of which will play on the five different wines we plan to pour at the dinner. It’s very much a Rhone Night. We’ll taste the new and astonishingly good, Cote du Rhone 2009, we’ll open a wine from the Gigondas region of the Rhone Valley and also wines from the Vacqueyras region – two of the most elegant regions of Southern Rhone. Jocunditas (the Latin name for Gigondas), literally means ‘of great pleasure’, and a Bacchus statue found there would suggest that the Romans knew they were onto a good thing way back then! Between the two regions the Grenache grape is the favored source of their red wine but there are startling differences between the two and Vacqueyras tends to add slightly more syrah.

This is going to be a Rhone lover’s night out – a great opportunity to taste the variations between Cotes du Rhone and the two siblings of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to meet one of the most influential wine-makers in the Rhone – influential both politically and oenologically. Cecile Dusserre is continuing a family history of wine-making, but quite uniquely for a French Domaine, Cecile is now the third generation of ‘daughters’ to run the vineyards and the business.

The five course dinner and the wines for each course inclusive of tax and service is a mere $85.00 per person. And as an added incentive we have negotiated with the Distributor to offer all the wines at a much reduced price – for orders taken on the night only.
